Hydration

I've seen news stories about athletes dying of dehydration from exercising in the summer heat. I sort of knew that as a person gets older sometimes the message that tells them they're thirsty starts to fail.

A week ago this past Sunday one of my Sunday school friends had symptoms of pollen allergies or maybe a cold. Over the course of the week she felt ill and puny and didn't eat or drink very much.

Saturday she was in the hospital because dehydration had caused her kidneys to fail. By Sunday afternoon she was dead.

Dottie had rheumatic fever as a child and had to stay in bed for two years when she was eight and nine. In her 20s the doctors told her she wouldn't live past age 40 because of the damage to her heart. In her 30s she stopped having cardiac checkups because she said all it did was make her scared and nervous. The year she turned 75 she metaphorically danced on the graves of those doctors. At 78 she did have to limit some activities because of her heart, but she kept house and did the shopping and enjoyed her husband, who turned 92 this week. We will all miss her.

So drink up, y'all, especially if you don't feel like it. Personally I go for PowerAde when I'm sick, it tastes good enough that I want to drink it, and it seems to keep respiratory things from going to my chest.
